Movie Review - The Fault in Our Stars

I have never ever cried before in my life. Even when I was born, I did not cry no matter how many times the doctor slapped me (The doctor was later sacked for child abuse). But when I read The Fault In Our Stars, I wept like a baby, especially at the eulogy part.

This was why I was pretty excited about this movie adaptation: Will Evilbean cry again?

(Yes, the first paragraph of this post is a metaphor; I did not weep like a baby)

Movie Title - The Fault In Our Stars

Genre:

(A love story between two cancer-stricken people)

Synopsis: This is a love story about 2 people who are cancer patients. Their relationship is literally (un)dying love. Between chemotherapy, lots of medicine and oxygen tubes decorating their face, you get to see how Hazel and Gus falls in love with each other in their short but fulfilling life.

Magically, the synopsis is just as short.

Stay back for: Stay back if you want to see all the girls with swollen eyes and tissues in their nose. It can be quite terrifying.

Movie Review - Divergent

I was really excited about Divergent. So much so that I booked the first screening available in Singapore. In fact, I was excited about Four's tattoos after reading it in the book, so I really wanted to see him naked. DON'T JUDGE.

Movie Title - Divergent

Genre:

(For this once, NO ANSWERS will be given for this picture charade. Guess the genre yourself muwahaha!)

Synopsis: This is a dystopian storyline, just like Hunger Games and Ender's Games, where the story is set in the far future. Just like Harry Potter, the society in Divergent is divided into 5 factions that each represent a different virtue and traits. If you did not read the book, you might be a little confused about the super chim (difficult) names that they used for each faction. Therefore, the super awesome Evilbean has included the picture below for you to get a rough idea of what each faction represents.

According to the society, everyone has to choose a faction and remain in that faction for the rest of their lives (just like Harry Potter). At the age of 16, teenagers will have to go through an aptitude test which will examine their personality, and serves an indicator of what faction they should choose based on their most predominant characteristic. However, our main character, do not have one dominant aptitude and thus is labelled as a DIVERGENT. Apparently, being a Divergent is dangerous and if anyone knew, she would be killed.

So, will she be able to live with this secret and lead a happily-ever after life? You and I know the answer...

NOPE.

Review: The Evilbean felt that in this movie, the director failed to inject some sort of excitement into the storyline. The main character is supposed to be in some sort of danger because she is a divergent. However, for 2/3 of the movie, except for some bullying in her training school, Tris did not face any real danger. You know in some movies, you feel so excited that you stop eating the popcorns and your eyes are just glued to the screen. Then, when the movie is over you realise you haven't even touch the popcorns and you go like "WTS I PAID $6 for this popcorn to sit in this popcorn holder." In Divergent, you will munch all your popcorn away.

The only exciting part comes near the end, where they start to go to war with the other factions. The other part where I was looking forward to was the part where Four goes shirtless and reveals his tattoos to Tris.

The scene was shot beautifully but the events that led up to this were quite random and fragmented. In fact, for the whole movie, I felt that the script was made up of random pages of the book. The scriptwriter must have like randomly "OKAY page 1 to 5 for scene 1, hmmmm page 20-30 for scene 2.." The flow of the movie was really fragmented.

Like I have said before in my hunger games movie review, #amoviecanneverbeasgoodasthebook. You kind of have higher expectations for the movie when you have read the book. In this case, the movie falls really short of expectations.

However, if you did not read the book, I think you will find the storyline pretty interesting and might intrigue you enough to go and buy the book to read. If you do, DON'T SPOIL OKAY, I haven't had time to read the second and third book yet. IF YOU SPOIL IT FOR ME, I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN.

Movie Review - Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire

(If you haven't read my first post, you should before reading on. If not, you will miss out something.)

The premise of hunger games is awesome - because its' story uniquely appeals to both guys and girls, just like Harry Potter. I have fervently read all 3 of the hunger games series because YOU JUST WANNA KNOW WHETHER THE CAPITOL WINS OR OUR AWESOME BOW-GIRL WINS.

"I hope that bird gets into my line of sight soon.. BECAUSE MY NOSE ITCHES"

Movie Title - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Genre:

(It means Action + Science-fiction)

Synopsis: This movie is a classic portrayal of human rights in a dystopian era. Our Katniss, after winning her first hunger games with her "love interest" Peeta, finally gets to enjoy her victory... or will she? Cannot be right, if not how to have Part II? Catching fire is aptly named - wai our mockingjay catch fire? What did she do to land herself into hot soup? At the end of the first movie, we can see that President Snow already buay song with her. What kind of things will President Snow plan to ensure the demise of this symbol that is causing the uprising in the different districts?

Review: Everytime a book gets rewritten into a movie, there are bound to be comparisons from the movie critics as well as book fans about how the movie is not as good as the movie. Every. Single. Time. Let's get this fact straight once and for all: A movie can never be as good as the book. Hashtag this. #amoviecanneverbeasgoodasthebook

For example, in the book, we can understand the morality struggles Katniss face with this paragraph:

It's stupid, I know, that his efforts make me so vexed. All I wanted was to keep Peeta alive, and I couldn't and Finnick could, and I should be nothing but grateful. And I am. But I am also furious because it means I will never stop owing Finnick Odair. Ever. So how can I kill him in his sleep?"

These feelings from the protagonist are what made us so invested with the characters in the books, but try portraying these sort of inner feelings in a movie.. no wayyyy. #amoviecanneverbeasgoodasthebook

But this movie? The director, Francis Lawrence, made a faithful adaptation to the book, squeezing in every little details from the book whenever he can. The first half of the movie explains why Katniss/Catnip is thrown into the games again. I have read some reviews that people find the first hour of the movie totally boring. Uhhh, so you just want to watch the game itself without knowing waiii is she back into the arena? Might as well just go watch pro-wrestling? Right?

The plot before the game is interesting as we see how the story develops and thickens with our mockingjay fighting President Snow+ Gamemaker. 1 versus 2. You can feel the anguish and the helplessness when she witness all the things the evil people at the Capitol do to her loved ones. All these pent up anger will finally culminate at the Arena when she does something to ruin the game.. again(?). Superbly awesome, that scene.

And for girls - Gale (Liam Hemsworth) is super handsome. I can't decide who is more handsome though, Liam or Chris Hemsworth (THOR)?

Stay back for: No ending credits, but stay back for the soundtrack from Coldplay - Atlas, which was nominated in the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for Motion Picture. (or you can just YouTube lah)

The same director is going to direct the last and final TWO parts of the Hunger Games! Looks like this is the norm for the movie industry isn't it - split the trilogy into two parts, earn more money. But as long as the screenplay and directing remains as good as this, I seriously don't mind seeing more Katniss and her bow.
