Food Review - Sunday Market

Smoked Salmon and Cheese French Toast

Most of the cafes that have sprouted in Singapore recently have really simple decors and minimalist designs due to rising business costs. The only sophisticated interior elements in cafes nowadays might just be the lighting and the coffee machine.

However, Sunday Market surprises cafe enthusiasts like us with their sophisticated interior. The cafe is carefully designed with brick walls and large fans, with a good mix of wooden furniture and greenery for a refreshing ambience.

The intricate, quirky designs and the hipster music in the background will make you feel that time has come to a stand still in this cafe. I am not kidding because we unknowingly spent almost TWO hours here, and we only put 1 hour worth of parking coupons.

HENG AR, no summon auntie!

Cappucino ($5)

Cappucino at Sunday Market

You will never see this cappucino on Instagram. I took about 20 shots, but none came out nice. And the taste of this is as bad as it looks. Besides the unimpressive latte art, the froth was thick and rough, as if you are sipping leftover foam bubbles from Zoukout beach party.

Ice Chocolate ($7)

I felt cheated when this ice chocolate arrived. If you called it "Ice Chocolate Milk", okay, I can accept the taste. But this is ice CHOCOLATE. The chocolate should be the main character! The best way to describe the taste of this is to imagine that they filled the whole glass with milk, and then pumped in about 5-6 shots of chocolate syrup. It's okay, but not worth $7.

Smoked Salmon and Cheese Toast ($12.90)

Smoked Salmon and Cheese French Toast

This is one of their toast which is scramble eggs with smoked salmon and cream cheese, served on a buttered toast with grilled tomatoes and tomato marmalade. My gripe with this is that they slice up the salmon into small little pieces!

For salmon lovers, you will know that the addictive nature of salmon is that you can put the whole slice into your mouth while feeling the Omega-3 melt on your tongue. By chopping it up into small pieces, not only does it look less impressive, it also destroys the taste of the salmon. Besides that, the bread looks like a regular Gardenia bread. Taste-wise, it is not bad but I would probably pay $5.90 for this, not $12.90.

Fried Chicken Waffles ($11.90)

Fried Chicken Waffles at Sunday Market

Their only waffle in their Sunday Brunch menu comes with crispy fried chicken tenders, chitpotle maple drizzle and sweet & creamy slaw. This is their redeeming factor! Their waffle batter is flavourful and buttery, and they managed to make the exterior crispy and crunchy while maintaining the fluffy interior. It also came slightly over-toasted for that extra unique layer of taste.

The fried chicken was also perfectly done, maintaining the moist and tender juiciness of the killed chicken. The salad slaw serves as an intermission between your bites, cleansing your palette so that you can go for another piece of waffle + chicken with a fresh tongue. I gave this waffle an Evilbean rating of #5evilbeans on my Instagram (@Evilbean).

You can spend quite a long time just soaking in the ambience and studying every piece of furniture that they have placed in the cafe. The playlist, which contains mostly reggae/soul/samba, will slightly lift your mood with the drums and bass guitar continuously playing in the background.

Apparently, their matcha latte was recently featured on Straits Times, and their Bangkok toast is their bestseller. The Evilbean will definitely be back to try those out, as well as when the waffle-craving comes again.

Cafe Rating (out of 5 Evilbeans):
  (3.5)

Evilbean's last words/recommendation:
- Come here and see how hours can just fly by inside this intricately-designed cafe. Kudos to the owners for taking the effort to decorate the place, but definitely need more work on the coffee and the quality of the ingredients used for their food.
