Best Cafes, Street Food and Attractions in Malacca - Jonker Steet Night Market, Street Food and Must-Buy Guide (Part 2)
Everything happens in Jonker Street.
Yes, in Malacca, you do not really have to venture out that much to get a taste of what Malacca is like, you just have to fully explore Jonker Street (雞場街) from day to night.
This is the "Chinatown" of Malacca, and also one of the places where you get to experience the flavours of different cultures all coming together in a single area. Once you step into Jonker Street, you would feel as if you had stumbled into a time portal and had transported yourself back to the 60's; it's like you are a character in a scene of some classic Chinese movies.
Besides the 50's ambience, you would also find an array of food at their night market. The stores would start coming out around 6'ish, so be there at around that time to beat the crowd that would start to swarm in at around 7.
There were so many different stalls selling different food in Jonker Street. I tried as many as I could, and this is the list of street foods which I thought are must-tries:
1. Watermelon Slushie
2. Cheap & Colourful Dim Sum - Mr Pau Dim Sum
Remember when I told you to skip the Dim Sum shop in Part 1 of the guide? That was because I thought that this one is better!

Just looking at all these colours is enough to whet my appetite for these dim sum.
3. Gula Melaka Cendol
You must be kidding me if you are intending to skip Gula MELAKA when you are in MELAKA. That's like not eating New York cheesecake when you are in New York.
One of the better cendol in Malacca is the one at Bibik House, which is located at 121 Jalan Hang Jebat.
"Look at that Gula Melaka goodness spilling all over the bowl!"
I like the snow white coconut milk and despite it being overloaded by the Gula Melaka, the sweetness of the cendol was just right. However, after being pampered by smooth, milky snowflakes from the dozens of bingsoos I have eaten, I felt that the ice was really coarse. Nevertheless, still a pretty good bowl of ice, especially if you like the taste of Gula Melaka.
4. Traditional Baked Pastries
Look out for this store that hawks its traditional baked pastries outside. The sheer visual is enough for us to part some of our Ringgit goodbye in exchange for some of these "老婆饼" and "豆沙饼".
5. Smelly Tofu you can smell miles away
I really pity the vendors beside him. The smell was so pungent that I could smell it one street away. If you put your nose really close to the screen right now, you might just be able to get a waft of these stink bombs.
But, as they say, the smellier smelly tofus are, the better they taste. This store had one of the longest queue in the night market - a testament to its great taste. Plus, the banner is kinda cute.
6. TasteBetter Durian Puffs
We read in some other travel blogs about this must-try in Jonker Street, so we searched high and low for this durian puffs.
We finally found this shop after much walking and gobbled these 6 durian puffs in one shot. It was not bad, probably a #3.5evilbeans, a #4evilbeans if you factor in the price.
7. Ding Ding Tang (Hard maltose candy)
I have always loved Ding Ding Tang (丁丁糖), despite how annoying it is to dig those sticky residue out of my teeth. Imagine my happiness when I hear the familiar "ding ding" sound when I was strolling down the night market!
I really loved the flavours in this one. It was minty and had a strong malt flavour. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE OUT!
8. Crispiest Waffles EVER
If you spot this 2 God of Fortune statues, MAKE A RUSH FOR THEIR WAFFLES AT THE DISPLAY, because they were one of the crispiest waffles I had ever eaten!
The waffles come in 2 flavours: Peanut and Chocolate. I like peanut on my waffles more so I ordered it in peanut. OH, THE SYMPHONY OF CRISPY WAFFLES crunching in my mouth... It was REALLY, REALLY GOOD. I wished I could buy a dozen of these home.
The liquid nitrogen fad has spread to Malacca and everyone was queuing up for a chance to spurt smoke from their nose.
Unfortunately, for some reason, we were unable to get the nitrogen to come out of our noses. And the crackers were not exactly very nice either. Might as well pour the liquid nitrogen into our nose for the effect that we all crave for.
Not exactly yummy, and I don't get how this egg can be funny. MISLEADING SIGNBOARD.
And these are the DON'T TRY:
Despite its appearance, this carrot cake had some weird taste. There wasn't any of the wok-hei (breath of the wok) in it and lacked flavours. Just, ugh. We threw this away after one mouth.
We should have known better, but this egg tart is not worth the calories. Try something else.
